It’s finally here! The HTC Dream a.k.a Android Dev Phone 1

March 8th, 2009 by yuxiang

Waited for nearly two weeks and it’s finally here in my hands. It’s the Android Dev Phone 1 a.k.a HTC Dream.

Was waiting at my floor corridor on when the DHL van is gonna arrive since 7pm and waited until 8 plus while cooking my dinner. 8.10 came a call by DHL delivery man stating that he will be by my door in 5 minutes!

Tada, it’s ironic of the shipping packaging because it’s a Fedex large box with a DHL closure sticker on it.

Well anyway, ta da~ the phone!

Different from the retail, it doesn't have fancy retail box, but has all the accessories

It’s my first ordering from the states and I must say DHL did a great job delivering it to me from the states…although I was very disappointed they didn’t listen to my request…the same request made 3 times over the phone.

Here’s what happened. Thursday I saw the status of my shipment clearing the custom and I called to verify the delivery method myself, without having them to prompt me. “Evening time,” i said.

And on Thursday evening again i received my delivery gateway in US on how the shipment is to be delivered. I called DHL to confirm, yet again – they suggest a 7-9pm slot.

And on the delivery day, which is Friday, I was shocked to see the status of my shipment – With the delivery courier. I was ‘WTF’.

With hesitation, I called DHL to ask for the reason for the status and confirmed with them that I want my delivery to be made during the evening when I can get home to sign for.

One hour later, a call came. Surprisingly, it’s from DHL! Nooo not the service centre, but the delivery man! “Hello, is this TYX? Are you at home…Cause I’m at Block 658 already.”

Like NO? And nobody is at home, apparently. I even ask him to wait for 3 minutes for me to call back home, hoping someone will be taking ‘MC’ and stayed home thus can sign for me =X

I called and ask him for a redelivery in the evening, where DHL finally know what this fussy customer wants. “In the evening.”

Ah! Anyway, the box is unopened. Great! And after one day of usage, not bad actually. The battery life abit pathetic only. I use 3G to surf and 1 hours later it gave me a 60% left.

Great Facebook interface too, apparently the browser somehow…uses the iPhone version of Facebook. LOL. The annoying part is whenever I read an email, and closes the E-mail app, and reopen again, it’s being ‘unread’ again. Freaking annoying.

But overall, great keyboard, great interface, great grip and hold of the device, and great customization if you know coding in Java(How I hated Java in the poly days) and finally, a better messaging device as compared to iPhone where I hate typing on the touchscreen keypad.

And there’s no reason to be tied to a two-year plan with Singtel for this when you get an official product from HTC/Google at a better price from Google Android Dev Site

(Please don’t hesitate to ask me how I got it cheaper than what you all think it’d be. Hint: I don’t use Google official UPS shipping. Freaking expensive. US$120. About half of the price of the phone. I spent less than half of that, in SGD.)
